WHAT IS EMERI
-------------
EMERI is a DOS-based "Applet" designed to browse and search
Microsoft Windows' "CardFile" databases quickly and conveniently,
from the DOS command-line.
WHAT CAN EMERI DO FOR ME?
-------------------------
If you're like most people these days, you tend to bounce in and
out of Microsoft Windows -- Windows is great for some things, but
good ol' DOS is still the platform for most of today's
applications.
Microsoft Windows comes with several small, "freebie"
applications (little "Applets") in the "Accessories" Group in
Program Manager. One of the more useful ones is the "CardFile"
program which maintains an electronic address and phone book.
CardFile is extremely handy, especially for folks who are always
accruing new contacts, "leads", and other phone numbers and
pertinent addresses.
While CardFile is very handy, its usefulness is diminished by the
fact that Murphy's Law dictates that whenever you need to look up
a phone number or address, you'll be at the DOS command-line
instead of in Windows!
Originally, several of us here at Rhode Island Soft Systems, Inc.
were using CardFile to keep track of phone numbers. But, it
seemed that we all shared a common experience -- we'd have to
load up Windows just to check for a phone number. Some people
became frustrated and ceased using CardFile, others grumbled, and
some decided to implement a DOS-based program that could access
the CardFile database from DOS! Now we all use CardFile, happily
using EMERI whenever we're in DOS!
EMERI provides case-insensitive and partially qualified searches,
and even convenient "pick lists" for loading/changing among
different CardFile databases.
Some people who hardly ever use Windows even use CardFile to
maintain their phone/address books because they can use EMERI
from DOS. Please examine EMERI and see just how useful CardFile
can be!
EMERI(tm) 1.2 Documentation PAGE 1
VERIFICATION OF FILES
---------------------
At this point, please look for all of the files that belong to
the EMERI package. All of the files are listed in the file
PACKING.LST If the PACKING.LST file or any of the files listed in
PACKING.LST are missing, please contact us for an official copy
of EMERI -- it would not be fair to either the user or Rhode
Island Soft Systems, Inc. to have a user evaluate an incomplete
package.
THE QUICK INSTALLATION
----------------------
This section will give advanced DOS users and programmers a quick
start on custom installing EMERI. Please note that EMERI is
shipped with a comprehensive installation program which automates
the installation of EMERI. If you have any questions at all
about installing EMERI, please refer to the following section
which discusses installing EMERI via the included installation
program.
EMERI is extremely simple to use, and there are only two items
that should be recognized during installation. First, EMERI is
most useful when it can be called up quickly and easily with no
fuss, no muss. To effect this ease of use, we heavily recommend
that EMERI be placed in a directory that is listed in one's DOS
PATH command. A hard drive is by no means a requirement of
EMERI, but it is certainly preferable. The PATH command is
typically located in one's AUTOEXEC.BAT file which can be found
in the top level ("root") directory of the hard drive or bootable
floppy.
We recommend that the EMERI files be collected in a directory
named "EMERI", such as C:\EMERI, but the EMERI files can be
placed in any directory at all. It should be verified that EMERI
is placed in a directory that is listed in the DOS PATH command.
If the directory is not listed in the DOS PATH command, it should
be added.
Finally, it should be noted that there are two files that are
critical to the operation of EMERI: The executable (EMERI.EXE)
and the configuration file (EMERI.INI). Both files should be
located in the same directory. Please refer to the section
regarding customizing the configuration file for more information
in this regard.
** To summarize, a quick start to EMERI can be achieved by simply
copying the EMERI.EXE and EMERI.INI files to any directory listed
in the DOS PATH command. Refer to the section regarding
customizing the configuration file in order to customize EMERI's
operation.
EMERI(tm) 1.2 Documentation PAGE 2
INSTALLING EMERI
----------------
EMERI is shipped with a comprehensive installation program to
automate traditional installation. To install EMERI, you must
first change to the drive and/or directory where the EMERI files
are located.
If the EMERI files are on a floppy disk, insert the diskette into
the A: or B: drive, and type either A: or B: as appropriate, to
change to the floppy. Next, type INSTALL and follow the
installation prompts. For example, installation might appear as:
C:\> A:
A:\> INSTALL
If the EMERI files are in a directory on a hard drive, change to
the directory where they are located, such as C:\DOWNLOAD\TEMP,
or whatever directory name is appropriate, by typing CD
C:\DOWNLOAD\TEMP. Next, type INSTALL and follow the installation
prompts. For example, installation might appear as:
C:\> CD C:\DOWNLOAD\TEMP
C:\DOWNLOAD\TEMP> INSTALL
Please note that these are just examples -- the directories names
will certainly be different for each individual computer. The
above examples are for illustrative purposes only.
CUSTOMIZING THE CONFIGURATION FILE
----------------------------------
The configuration file is a plain ASCII text file containing
three lines of information.
The first line of the configuration file contains the full
directory path where the CardFile databases are located.
Typically, this would be the Microsoft Windows home directory,
such as C:\WINDOWS. The default value is "C:\WINDOWS".
The second line contains the name of the CardFile database that
should be loaded by default, upon startup. If your most used
cardfile is called PHONES.CRD, then this line should list
PHONES.CRD. The default value is "BUSINESS.CRD".
Finally, the third line contains a "file mask" that describes the
file names that will appear in the "pick list" when selecting to
load a new CardFile database. The default value is "*.CRD".
The default EMERI.INI configuration file is shipped as follows:
C:\WINDOWS
BUSINESS.CRD
*.CRD
EMERI(tm) 1.2 Documentation PAGE 3
USING EMERI
-----------
The first thing a user should know is that pressing the F1 key
within EMERI will bring up a "cheat sheet" help screen which is a
handy reminder for the keys that are used by EMERI. What
follows, in this section, is a detailed description of all of
EMERI's features. However, this document should not deter --
while there are a lot of handy features in EMERI, they are
extremely intuitive and we believe that most users will "take to"
EMERI very quickly.
Because EMERI is installed in a directory located in one's DOS
PATH, it can be accessed at any time by simply typing "EMERI" at
the DOS command line.
When EMERI starts, it will load the cardfile specified on the
second line of the EMERI.INI file. At that point, the user is
free to browse the cardfile.
MOVING THROUGH A CARDFILE
-------------------------
Pressing the UP and DOWN arrow keys on the keyboard will cause
the cardfile to scroll forwards and backwards, respectively,
through the cardfile. It should be noted that we've made the
cardfile viewer cyclical in that upon reaching the end of the
cardfile, EMERI wraps around to the beginning again. This wrap
around occurs in both directions, which is very convenient. Upon
starting EMERI, for example, pressing the DOWN arrow key will
scroll backwards from the first card to the last card in the
file.
Once in the middle of a cardfile, one can jump to the first card
in the file by pressing the HOME key on the keyboard, or jump to
the last card by pressing the END key.
EMERI(tm) 1.2 Documentation PAGE 4
SEARCHING FOR SPECIFIC CARDS
----------------------------
Often, it is convenient to just jump right to a specific card.
The F3 key provides this functionality. Pressing the F3 key
causes a dialog box to pop up in the middle of the screen. This
is an edit box in which a text string should be entered. This
string will be used to search for a particular card. It is
important to recognize that searches are performed on the card
TITLE, at the top of each card, and not on the contents (body)
of each card.
Performing searches is very convenient because the search feature
recognizes partially qualified matches. This means that only
part of a phrase needs to be entered. For example, "Jon" will
match on "Jones." Furthermore, the search string can be located
anywhere within the title, which is extremely handy. One might
not remember if a card was entered as "John Jones" or "Jones,
John." Simply entering "Jon" would match on both -- a user does
not have to type the exact title! In cases where there is more
than one title that matches a partially qualified search string,
EMERI will stop at the first card it encounters, searching
forward from the current card, wrapping around and back to the
current card again. If EMERI does not jump to another card, it
means that there was no match.
Because EMERI wraps, any card can always be searched. Because
EMERI stops at the first match, it is possible to search for "J"
to jump to the "J's" then scroll through them, one at a time, if
the user has forgotten how to spell someone's name, but remembers
that it started with "J" (for example).
Searching is also case insensitive which means that it ignores
upper and lower case, and simply looks at the letters involved.
This is helpful because, combined with a partially qualified
string, it allows us to simply type "jon" to jump to "Jones." It
can be extremely helpful in instances where, for example, a card
titled "MicroSystems" is desired -- the user does not have to
have the case correct, but rather can just type "microsystems" !
It is now clear, then, that the search features allow extremely
quick and convenient ways of jumping to cards, offering the
greatest "hit" rate, so that we always find the card we want --
right away!
As a convenience, EMERI remembers the last search that was
performed, so that one can quickly and easily search again on the
same string without having to retype the string! Simply press F3
again, and the dialog box pops up with the last used search
string. By pressing ENTER at that point, we can search again on
the same string.
Pressing the ESC key at any time while enter a search string in
the dialog box will cause the search function to abort, and no
search will occur.
EMERI(tm) 1.2 Documentation PAGE 5
LOADING ALTERNATE CARDFILES
---------------------------
Often, it is useful to maintain separate cardfiles, each
containing different types of information. One cardfile might
contain phone and address information for friends and relatives,
for example, while another contains business contact information.
EMERI accommodates this situation very well, by providing an
option to change to a different cardfile. Pressing the F4 key
causes a "pick list" window to pop up. The cursor arrow keys can
be used to move around the window and hilite the desired
cardfile. Pressing the ENTER key will select the hilited
cardfile, and cause it to replace the current cardfile in EMERI.
Pressing ESC causes the window to close, and a new cardfile is
NOT loaded -- ESC simply aborts the process of changing
cardfiles.
Upon loading a new cardfile, the status box at the bottom right
hand corner of the screen in updated to show the new file name,
and the number of cards in the file.
The file names that appear in the "pick list" window are
specified according to the first and third lines of the EMERI.INI
configuration file. The first line specifies which directory to
look in, to find the cardfiles. The third line specifies the
"file mask" to use. A mask of "*.*" would cause all files in the
directory to be displayed, including executable ".EXE" programs,
and more. Because Microsoft Windows standardizes on ".CRD" as
the file name extension for cardfiles, the default mask for EMERI
is "*.CRD" which will display only files ending in ".CRD". The
default settings, for example, specify a directory of
"C:\WINDOWS" with a file mask of "*.CRD" -- this will cause the
"pick list" window to display all ".CRD" cardfiles in the
"C:\WINDOWS" directory.
Depending upon the file mask and/or number of cardfiles, it is
possible for there to be more files than will fit in the "pick
list" window. Pressing the PGUP and PGDN keys on the keyboard
will cause the window to scroll back and forth through the list
of files.
EXITING EMERI
-------------
At any time, while viewing cards and scrolling through them,
pressing ESC will cause EMERI to exit, and the user will be in
the same directory that the user was in before starting EMERI.
Hence, EMERI can be jumped in to, searched, and then quickly
exited, with the user left right where he/she had been.
EMERI(tm) 1.2 Documentation PAGE 6
SUMMARY OF FEATURES AND KEYSTROKES
----------------------------------
As has been demonstrated, EMERI has been optimized for speed.
Its keystrokes have been designed to be intuitive, and to allow
for quick and easy searching for cards, and fast exiting so that
the user can get back to the task at hand.
Once again we'll remind our users that a summary help screen is

DEFINITION OF SHAREWARE
-----------------------
Shareware distribution gives users a chance to try software
before buying it. If you try a Shareware program and continue
using it, you are expected to register. Individual programs
differ on details -- some request registration while others
require it, some specify a maximum trial period. With
registration, you get anything from the simple right to continue
using the software to an updated program with printed manual.
Copyright laws apply to both Shareware and commercial software,
and the copyright holder retains all rights, with a few specific
exceptions as stated below. Shareware authors are accomplished
programmers, just like commercial authors, and the programs are
of comparable quality. (In both cases, there are good programs
and bad ones!) The main difference is in the method of
distribution. The author specifically grants the right to copy
and distribute the software, either to all and sundry or to a
specific group. For example, some authors require written
permission before a commercial disk vendor may copy their
Shareware.
Shareware is a distribution method, not a type of software. You
should find software that suits your needs and pocketbook,
whether it's commercial or Shareware. The Shareware system makes
fitting your needs easier, because you can try before you buy.
And because the overhead is low, prices are low also. Shareware
has the ultimate money-back guarantee -- if you don't use the
product, you don't pay for it.
EMERI(tm) 1.2 Documentation PAGE 8
EMERI 1.2 REGISTRATION INFORMATION
----------------------------------
EMERI is a "shareware program" and is provided at no charge to
the user for evaluation. Feel free to share it with your
friends, but please do not give it away altered or as part of
another system. The essence of "user-supported" software is to
provide personal computer users with quality software without
high prices, and yet to provide incentive for programmers to
continue to develop new products. You are encouraged to pass a
copy of EMERI along to your friends for evaluation. Please
encourage them to register their copy if they find that they can
use it. Please refer to the VENDOR.DOC file for details on
distributing EMERI.
If you find this program useful and find that you are using EMERI
and continue to use EMERI after a reasonable trial period (60
days maximum), you must make a registration payment of $14.95 to
Rhode Island Soft Systems, Inc. The registration fee will
license one copy for use on any one computer at any one time. If
you do not have a copy of the EMERI Version 1.2 program, or are
missing any of the files listed in the PACKING.LST file, you may
obtain a full registered version of EMERI 1.2 on diskette
directly from Rhode Island Soft Systems, Inc. for $19.95 (U.S.).
EMERI must be licensed for each machine that it is used on.
Unless you have multiple computers, or use EMERI both at home and
on your computer at work, this stipulation will mostly apply to
businesses and organizations.
Site licenses, however, are available to cover these situations.
Please refer to the section on Site Licenses for more
information.
Users of EMERI must register and pay for their copies of EMERI
within 60 days of first use or their license is withdrawn.
Please refer to the file REGISTER.DOC for a complete registration
form.
EMERI(tm) 1.2 Documentation PAGE 9
BENEFITS OF REGISTRATION
------------------------
What will registration yield? Besides rightfully paying for a
product that is being used, a user will actually receive some
very important benefits.
Upon receiving a registration, Rhode Island Soft Systems, Inc.
will immediately return a written receipt, a letter of
acknowledgment thanking the user for registering the software,
literature on any special offers available at the time of
registration, and the latest issue of RISS News, our company
newsletter!
The user is immediately placed in our database of registered
users from which we generate mailing lists for our newsletter
which is used to announce upgrades to our products, or new
products altogether. This is very important since many users
have registered "old" versions of our software, not knowing that
a newer version was available. We were able to provide them with
a new version which they might not have received otherwise.
Registered users are provided with discounts on other products,
as they are released, as well as limited-time special offers that
we are able to grant at the time of registration. (In the past
we've been able to grant major discounts on several different
magazines, free subscriptions to CompuServe, free CompuServe
usage credits, and more!)
Registered users are encouraged to take advantage of our
Corporate BBS. Of course, your registrations provide us with the
capital necessary for us to continue providing new versions of
EMERI as well as other new products.
While we courteously answer all letters we receive, registered
users are provided with the highest possible degree of customer
support for their questions and concerns.
EMERI(tm) 1.2 Documentation PAGE 10
INTERNATIONAL (NON-U.S.) REGISTRATIONS
--------------------------------------
While it is true that we are based in the United States of
America, we highly value our International Users! We've learned
the "hard way", however we firmly believe that we are now in a
much better position to serve our International customers more
effectively.
For International Orders, the most convenient method of payment
would probably be to charge the order to a Visa, MasterCard,
AmEx, or Discover card. However, we do accept checks of course.
We request that, whenever possible, all checks or money orders be
made out in U.S. currency and drawn on a U.S. bank. Often it
is not possible to have a check drawn on a U.S. Bank, and we
understand that.
Canadian customers can send checks written in U.S. Dollars from
a U.S. Dollar account, drawn on a Canadian bank, without giving
the matter any further thought. If you'd prefer to write a check
in Canadian dollars, please apply the current exchange rate.
From other countries, however, we request that we be provided
with a "Postal Money Order" from your National Post Office, or an
American Express International Money Order. "U.S. Currency" or
"U.S. Dollars" should be clearly marked on the check.
If none of the options above are possible, then we require an
extra US$10 check-cashing fee be added to the cost of
registration. We apologize for this extra charge, however we are
charged US$10 just to cash an International Check. When writing
a check or money order in non-U.S. currency, please make the
necessary monetary conversions so that when we cash the
check/money order we receive the full cost of the registration
plus the equivalent of US$10 to cover the check cashing fee.
Users will be credited only for the amount received after
conversion.
EMERI(tm) 1.2 Documentation PAGE 11
SITE LICENSE INFORMATION
------------------------
Site licenses/volume discounts are available. CardFile databases
become extremely important on computers being used in the work
place where personnel require quick, finger-tip access to phone
numbers, address information, and other sorts of information.
Cardfiles can reduce time wasted searching for phone numbers, and
help ensure that phone numbers, etc. are collected and
maintained, and not misplaced. For businesses, one or more
simple CardFile databases can be a great productivity boon, and
for individual users it can be tremendously handy.
A Site License basically provides volume discounts on purchases
of multiple copies of EMERI.
For your convenience, we do accept Purchase Orders on Site
Licenses from Schools and Businesses.
Please refer to the file SITELICE.DOC for full details on our
fantastic discounts, and a copy of the site license registration
form.
OUR FAIR, NO FEAR UPGRADE POLICY
--------------------------------
At Rhode Island Soft Systems, Inc. we strive to provide quality
software and the best customer service possible. As such, we
have instituted an upgrade policy which we believe to be very
fair to our valued users.
Due to the nature of shareware, many users are still receiving
and registering "outdated" versions of EMERI. Upon receipt of
registration we promptly inform the user of the availability of a
newer version, and allow the user the option of upgrading to the
new version for only the difference in price between the old
version and the new. If the next version sells for the same
price, then there is no charge for the upgrade!
The user is in no way obligated to upgrade, however if he/she
chooses this option, the user is able to register the new version
for the same total cost as if he/she had registered the newer
version to begin with. Upgrading does not cost the user ANYTHING
over the normal registration price of the newer version.
Due to this policy, our users should not be wary of registering
EMERI Version 1.2. If a newer version of EMERI should be
available at the time of registration, all users will be provided
the option of upgrading to the new version for only the
difference in registration fee -- registrations of EMERI are
never obsolete!

REPORTING PROBLEMS WITH EMERI 1.2
-------------------------------------
At Rhode Island Soft Systems, Inc. we strive to provide the
highest quality software we possibly can. Due to the
proliferation of IBM-compatible systems, however, we can not
possibly test our software on every single system under every
possible combination of hardware and software configurations.
As such sometimes a problem does arise, with a particular
configuration, which we are able to investigate and solve. We
greatly appreciate the feedback that we receive from our users,
and have begun distributing a special form as of this release of
EMERI. The form can be found in the file COMMENT.DOC.
If any user should have a particular question, comment, or
problem we request that a copy of this form be filled out and
included with a letter. Receiving a copy of this form will
provide us with exactly the information which will help us on the
road to diagnosing a problem.
We are always interested in hearing comments from our users on
ways in which we can improve our product. The form in
COMMENT.DOC can also be used to mail in suggestions and requests.
